*I actually think this is possible (I did it once on a PVP server and it paid off), you need to make the place where trees are bright and have a high roof, compost also helps. * It's definitely possible; I've grown trees underground myself several times, particularly coffee cherry trees. You need plenty of open space and artificial light (steel lanterns work better, and they'll move themselves from back wall to leaves automatically), and compost helps.
