Chests can be placed inside [[basket]]s or other containers. They continue to carry their contents, and can be stacked with other chests even if they are empty or have differing contents. When a chest is later placed and used, its contents at the time of removal are available again. There is no way of identifying the contents of a chest before using it, so there is no guarantee that placing a chest from a stack will get you the chest you want, although general [[inventory]] stack handling tends to be LIFO (Last In First Out), Or you can color-code it with [[Paint]], If you are able to remember the colors, and separate the different colors by holding them.  If you don't separate the different colors, they all stack on top of eachother applyingg to the LIFO system. Chests do not despawn when you drop them, At least for a efficient time.

There is no way of viewing the contents of a chest before using/opening it, so there is no guarantee that placing a chest from a stack will get you the chest you want, although general [[inventory]] stack handling tends to be LIFO (Last In First Out). Color-coding chests with [[paint]] might help identify specific chests, with the most recently added chest's color appearing as the stack's icon.
