Where Found
Deposits of coal are common underground, where stone is found. It is more common near the surface of the world.
Uses
Coal serves as fuel for a furnace, metalwork bench, steam generator, or steam locomotive.
Coal is required to convert an iron ingot into a steel ingot in a furnace or electric furnace.
It's also a component in making a steam locomotive on a train yard.

- Coal used to be a craft able item at the portal until, in update version 1.4 (or 1.0 for Android, which paralleled iOS's 1.4 update) it was removed due to majicDave thinking it was too similar to cheating? - Until update 1.4 (1.0 for Android), to craft steel you needed 5 coal. In 1.4/1.0, the amount was reduced to 2 coal in a normal furnace, and 1 coal is needed alongside of 1 iron ingot to make steel in the electric furnace.
