Where Found

Golden chests are created only on the generation of a new world. They are located randomly underneath sand or sometimes dirt just above bedrock.

(Technically, golden chests are always in front of bedrock, but this is only obvious after they're removed.)

Use

Aside from the content they are created with, golden chests function just as crafted chests -- but yellow. They can be relocated, filled, carried, nested, and stacked with other golden chests. They will not stack in an inventory or other slot with regular chests.
