I think you should try to incorporate other weather-related assets than just snow or rain to the game; something like a hurricane, maybe, that would knock down a few trees, destroy torches, and break open any chest left above ground or not under shelter. Also, maybe it could blow off any hats you might be wearing (but not the special ones found at the poles). Or i think a flood-type disaster would be a good addition, killing most all crops, destroying torches, and not only drowning any animals, but also allowing fish and sharks to be able to swim up to that maximum flood height. Eventually both these disasters would recede, though. Also, maybe a natural warning as well to these types of disasters would be useful, like you start to hear and see large amounts of wind before a hurricane hits, or for a flood, an abnormally strong rain shower occurs beforehand, something of the sort.
Here are a few disasters that could be a good idea:
Hurricane
Flood
Tornado (maybe not though, too destructive)
Earthquake
Tsunami (may be hard to program; a warning for this could be receding water levels)
Meteor Shower
Also, here are a few natural geographic features you should add to the game:
Volcano
Geyser
Underground Spring (may be found in caves and/or small pockets just below the surface)
Waterfall
Swampland Biome
Geyser Field Biome
