Steel Lanterns are an improved version of the oil lantern. They were introduced in version 1.2.

They are waterproof, so they won't be dislodged by water. The light given off is whiter and travels farther in comparison to an oil lantern.
Five steel lanterns are produced at a metalwork bench from one oil, one glass and one steel ingot. Prior to version 1.4, they were instead crafted at the craft bench.
