This page is a redirect:
* Actually, this page is a template page. Each redirect page using this template will list its reasons in bullet point format like this, though. There is a maximum of 6 bullet points, because this page currently does not use a module, even though it should.
[view] [edit] [history] [refresh]Documentation

This template should be used on redirect pages to classify redirects under particular redirect categories (rcats), such as, for example, Category:Redirects from other capitalizations.

Usage

rcat. For multiple reasons, rcat1 Do not place any templates before the #REDIRECT Link. Always place the template after the #REDIRECT Link, to prevent breaking the redirect. It is recommended to leave a blank line between the redirect and the template for readability.

Not all redirects are useful, but some are.

produces
This page is a redirect:
 • From a Not all redirects are useful, but some are.

singular

produces
This page is a redirect:
 • From a singular to a plural term.

case or capitalization

produces
This page is a redirect:
 • From an alternative capitalization of the target page's title or a referenced term within the article. Usually these redirects are made solely to help with linking, because unpiped links only autocapitalize the first letter in a link, and the style guide requires most prose from using the capitalization of the in-game names of most features.

achievement or advancement

produces
This page is a redirect:
 • From the name of an advancement.
 • To a section of the target page. This section is also a subtopic of the target page.

List of reasons

Name Produces Category
Variations of words
plural From a plural to a singular term. Possibly not necessary, discuss. Category:Redirects from plurals
singular From a singular to a plural term. Category:Redirects to plurals
inflection or past tense or present tense or future tense or tense or verb or verb tense or verb inflection or noun inflection or agent noun or gerund From one verb or noun inflection to another inflection. The different names for this reason produce slightly different text to match. Category:Redirects from inflections
capitalization or case or cap or caps From an alternative capitalization of the target page's title or a referenced term within the article. Usually these redirects are made solely to help with linking, as the first letter of each word is not case sensitive when searching. Category:Redirects from other capitalizations
Typos and other valid ways to write a word
miscapitalization or miscap From an incorrect capitalization of the target page's title. Usually these redirects are made solely to help with aid with searching, so this redirect should not be linked to directly. Category:Redirects from miscapitalizations
spelling or spell From an alternative spelling of the target page's title. Category:Redirects from alternative spellings
typo or misspelling or misspell From a typo (i.e. an incorrect way to spell one of the words in the target page). Category:Typo redirects
diacritic or diacritics From the page with the same name without diacritical marks (accents, umlauts, etc.) to the target page with diacritics. Category:Redirects from titles without diacritics
Terminology and semantics related to the target page or its content
alt or alt name or alternate or alternate name or alternative or alternative name or variant of From an alternate name of a feature described in the target page. This has many variants, such as longer name, shorter name, and synoynm. Category:Redirects from alternative names
old or former or historic or historical From a former name present in older versions of the game to the current name of the feature described in the target page. Category:Redirects from former names
short or shorter or short name or shorter name From a shorter name for a feature to an article with a longer name. The shorter name is a name that is sometimes used in the game instead of the normal name, or it is a name given by Mojang Category:Redirects from shorter names
long or longer or long name or longer name or compound or compound name From a longer name or compound name to an article with a shorter name. This name might be used in-game instead of the normal name sometimes, or it might be a longer name given by Mojang. A compound name is a name that is made by combining 2 names together. For example, "Blacksmith Villager" combines "Blacksmith" with "Villager". Category:Redirects from longer names
Content that could be split into its own page
se or sect or section or subtopic From a subtopic of the target page to the appropriate section of the target page. In most cases, the titles of these redirects are subtopics. For example, Slime chunk redirects to Slime, because slime chunks are simply chunks where slimes spawn in all biomes. Variants of features that are covered on the same page should use subtopic as well. Category:Redirects to sections
anchor or anchor section or anchor subtopic From a subtopic of the target page to the appropriate section of the target page, but the section is marked using an Anchor and does not appear in the page's table of contents. Category:Redirects to anchors
in game name or in-game name or ign or in game or in-game From an in game name of a block, item, entity, or other feature which does not warrant an article on its own, instead fitting as part of a larger article (i.e. an article that also describes other features). This includes subtopic reason. Therefore, you don't need to list both. An example would be Trader Llama redirecting to Llama, because that page has not been split. The redirect does not need to link to a section. It only needs to link to a larger article. Category:Redirects from in-game names part of a larger article
variant From a variant of the feature described in the target page. Category:Redirects from variants
variant ign The feature is a variant of the main features described in the target page, and this redirect is the name of the feature.
variant of ign This redirect is the in-game name of a variant of one of the features described in the main page.
 • However, either the variant is not described in the target page, or this redirect is simply a variant of the feature. In the latter case, you should edit this redirect, and replace |variant of ign with |alt.
 • Also, the feature does not have a section on the page. The page is probably an overview page, and the feature this redirect relates to is probably a variant of the main feature of the page.
 • Consider removing this redirect, since it might not be necessary.
Category:Redirects from variants
Specific redirects for specific types of pages
version From a short term alternate name of the version described in the target page, without stating the edition the version is in. Category:Redirects from short version names

merge From a page which has been merged into another page. This redirect is kept to preserve the edit history. Category:Redirects from merges
history From a page with non-trivial edit history. Category:Redirects with history
Due to terminology used on talk pages
sh or sc or shortcut From a shortcut in any namespace to a page that is not a template. Category:Redirects from shortcuts
tsh or tsc or template shortcut From a template shortcut, used for convenience. Category:Redirects from template shortcuts

Guide when to use this template

To use this template, place it AFTER the #REDIRECT Link. Do NOT place the template before the #REDIRECT Link, as this breaks the redirect as a whole. Here is a general guide on what to place (on the first column) and on the second column generally states when to insert the template. Since this is a general guide, there may be exceptions or other circumstances not listed.

Guide
Template When to use
plural When the redirect name is plural, and the target page is singular
singular When the redirect name is singular, and the target page is plural
case When the capitalization of the redirect is different. For example, if the target is Zombified Piglin, Zombified piglin would be a valid redirect and adding R is useful, but Template:Fake redlink would not be a valid redirect.
alt For alternative names which the style guide allows
move When a page’s old name has been moved to a new name, usually, a redirect is left behind to prevent breaking links. Add this template to the redirect.
subtopic Usually when a notable redirect targets a specific subsection of a page, mainly because such subtopic does not warrant its own page.
ign When an in-game name of an block, entity, or item, like Acacia Boat does not warrant its own page, and is a subtopic, place this template to indicate both the “ign” reason and the “subtopic” reason.
historical When the redirect is a historical name pointing to the up-to-date target
version When the redirect is a short-term version name, usually excluding the edition. For example, 20w51a to Java Edition 20w51a
diacritics Because readers should not be expected to type diacritics, add this template to redirects with the same name, but without diacritics.
subtopic For achievement or advancement redirects, state both the subtopic and achievement/advancement reason.
