Floating islands are new terrain generation added in 1.6. Currently islands can be differ to small to big. Also the modes to get from ground to island can be to using a Jetpack to building ladder high enough. Not much is known about islands There is also the possibility that different gem-trees can grow on the island which differ to amethyst to diamond.
