Your idea about making a profit from gold spades is good, although it will tend to drive the price of gold spades down. There may be other such opportunities in the trade portal, too.
As for the ocean-fed well, note that it does drain the ocean, although it's so wide it's difficult to notice. Just a 2-4 wide pit (deep enough to avoid slopping or allow swimming) is enough to fill buckets and generate water.
