A kelp bed is a type of aquatic plant introduced in version 1.1.
Appearance
Kelp beds appear as light green stalks with long, thick leaves running along the sides. The entire stalks sways slightly as if being pushed around by water currents.
Where Found
A kelp bed can be found in water that does not freeze, anchored to the top of a solid block at the bottom. They've been seen spawned on sand, dirt, and stone and as deep as fifteen (15) blocks below the surface. It will grow upward until it reaches the water's surface.
Farming
Kelp beds produce kelp when harvested. They can be farmed by planting them in sand, dirt, or compost under two or more blocks of water. This is important because leaving the bottom-most block of kelp bed in place avoids the need for replanting.
Harvesting a kelp bed by hand produces one kelp, but using a machete will produce three. Blocks above a harvested block will despawn and may not produce any kelp.
