Sand is an alternate block to dirt for the surface of the world.
Appearance
Sand is a mottled yellow color.
Where Found
Sand can be found in desert biomes or beaches near some bodies of water. Small deposits can be found almost anywhere above bedrock. It can also be found in place of dirt across the top of some floating islands.
It is best harvested using a spade, although there is no loss associated with using anything else. A gold spade will produce occasional bonuses.
Starting in version 1.6, an electric press can convert gravel into sand.

Crafting
Sand can be processed in a kiln or electric kiln to make glass.
When combined with pig iron at a press, black sand is created.
Sand can also be smelted with black sand in an electric furnace to make a silicon ingot.
Sand can also be used to craft plaster at a builder's bench.

Notes
Like most blocks, sand remains where it's placed even if all support under it is removed.
It's possible to farm some plants in sand instead of dirt. This is possible with cacti, coconut trees, and flax.
