A lime is a fruit added in version 1.3.
Appearance
A lime is round and green with slight protrusions on opposite ends.
Where Found
Limes do not spawn naturally in a world. They will only first appear by mining unmined limestone with any pickaxe, buying one through a trade portal, transferring one from another world using a portal chest, or earning one as a bonus from meditation.
It is a rare bonus, produced in addition to the block of limestone. (One set of tests produced no limes using a flint pickaxe (512 strokes) and two with a stone pickaxe (1024 strokes).)
Once a lime is obtained from limestone, it grants the player the "Life From Stone" achievement.
Farming
Limes grow seasonally on lime trees and are harvested by hand. Limes may also be collected by felling the tree that bears the fruit and picking them up from the ground. Agriculturally, the fruit can be placed in a block of dirt or compost to grow a lime tree for farming additional limes.
Limes are most often harvested during late winter and spring.
Uses
Limes are edible, restoring health and hunger like other fruits.
Planting a lime in dirt or compost will spawn a lime tree.
Crafting
Five limes can be used to craft compost at a compost bin from version 1.6 onwards.

Notes
The "Life From Stone" achievement can only be earned by getting a lime from mining limestone, not from any other source.
Limes are citrus fruits that grow on lime trees. There are at least thirteen species of trees identified as limes.
Their appearance in-game from limestone is a pun on how the fruit shares its name with lime, a major component of limestone.
