Not the 3x3 "tic tac toe" pattern used, but when and how the segments appear.
Right now, a diagonal of three squares is used unless a solid block is both below and beside. And unless there's another stair in the upper left/lower right, a stair block always displays going up to the right. (Diagonally adjacent stairs switch the default to rising to the left.) Under the right conditions, this makes them look odd and leaves gaps.
My idea is this: The default display is a single square in the middle. Any adjacent stairs (except vertically) makes the square in that direction display. Any non-diagonally adjacent solid block makes all three squares on that side display.
